Meet Dr. Mercer

Dr. James E. Mercer graduated with honors from Vanderbilt University where he received his Bachelor of Arts degree. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery Degree from The Ohio State University. Following dental school he completed a one-year General Practice Residency at the Medical College of Georgia followed by a two-year research fellowship in the Department of Oral Biology. Dr. Mercer completed his four-year specialty program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at the Medical College of Georgia in 1988. He has been in private practice in Columbia since 1988.

Dr. Mercer is Board Certified by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and is a Fellow of the American and International Associations of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He was elected to Fellowship in the International College of Dentist, the America College of Dentist and the Pierre Fauchard Academy honorary dental organizations.

Dr. Mercer currently serves as Chairman of the South Carolina Patient’s Compensation Fund and the American Dental Association Business Enterprise Inc. He is a board member of the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission for CT, member of the American Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons Committee on Healthcare and Advocacy, and a Delegate to the ADA House of Delegates. He has served as President of the SC Dental Association, and the SC Society of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons and previously chaired the SC Oral Health Advisory Council, ADA Council on Dental Benefits, SCDA Legislative Committee and the SCDA Medicaid Committee.

He has lectured nationally on Integrating New Technology into Your Practice, Dental Benefits, Peer Review and Mediation, Dental Coding, Cone Beam CT, and 3D Surgical Planning. Dr. Mercer is an active member of Gateway Baptist Church and enjoys spending time with his family on the water, coaching youth sports and competitive saltwater billfishing.
